Stinking Toe and Fruit Juice

Smells bad, tastes good. Stinking toe, or ‘tinkin’ toe, comes into season between April and June. It’s still available but is not as popular as it once was. Jamaicans who can get past the smell usually toss the shell and eat the pulp. A few have ventured into making beverages and custards. Stinking toe has also been used in folk medicine to relieve headaches and rheumatism and, when applied to the skin, the juice reportedly gets rid of ringworm and fungus. Stinking is also said to be a source of iron, calcium and a natural energy booster.

10th Anniversary (Issue 2), 2016

  • Pulp of 2 stinking toes
  • 8 cups pineapple juice
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 4 cups water
  • Juice of 1 lime, optional

    Direction
  1. Blend or thoroughly mix the stinking toe pulp, juice and water.
  2. Add nutmeg and lime juice. Stir.
  3. Pour into glasses filled with ice.

Note: Substitute soursop, passion fruit and other juices for the pineapple.

One Jamaican retiree remembers that students who turned up at school reeking of ‘tinkin’ toe would be promptly sent home. Some kids would use this to their advantage, “smearing” it all over themselves if they hadn’t done their homework or if they just didn’t want to be at school on a particular day.
